In the old Lynyrd Skynyrd song, a guy is confronted by an aggressive, gun-wielding man in a dispute over the affection of a woman. With a gun pointed at his head, the guy explains that he’s not looking for trouble and asks for mercy. He asks for a 3-step head start in leaving the vicinity and promises that once he escapes, he’ll leave the woman alone and stay gone. Of course, the gun-toting man didn’t show mercy in the song. It took a distraction, a glass of water falling to the floor, to allow the guy to escape in the song. In real life, victims probably shouldn’t count on receiving mercy from attackers.
In the song, the guy was lucky that water fell on the floor and diverted the attacker’s attention long enough to allow him to flee the bad situation. I wouldn’t want to just hope for a lucky diversion to happen at the perfect moment. In real life, we need to plan ahead to develop an effective escape plan. I feel better knowing that, with Pepper Spray, Mace, Stun Gun, Taser, Personal Alarms, etc. at my fingertips, I ‘m able to create a diversion if/when I need one, to allow me a chance to Escape Unharmed.
